Days after she was announced as director of the upcoming “The Last Thing He Wanted,” the “Bessie” helmer has signed on to direct “An Uncivil War,” a drama chronicling the battle waged by Gloria Steinem, lawyer Florynce “Flo” Kennedy and other leaders of the women’s movement of to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment.

Rees will direct from a new version of David Kukoff’s original script, notes The Hollywood ReporterPrincipal casting is already underway and production is set to begin in early 2018.

“I’m particularly interested in digging into the messiness of the women’s movement — the many different alliances that were formed and fractured and exploring who got left behind vs who got remembered,” stated Rees. “The richness and texture of this story lie in the complicated bargains struck and broken in the imperfect, stuttering trajectory toward equality. Thrilled that FilmNation let me put my own spin on the script and I’m going to have a lot of fun putting together another amazing ensemble cast to ignite it.”

FilmNation is fully financing the film and is producing alongside Peter Heller, with FilmNation’s vp of development Ashley Fox overseeing on behalf of the company, according to THR.

Rees, who also directed the indie hit “Pariah” and the Emmy-winning HBO film “Bessie,” is cooking with gas after helming “Mudbound,” the critically-acclaimed post-WWII drama which Netflix scooped up out of Sundance.

As previously reported, she is also set to direct the Joan Didion-authored political thriller “The Last Thing He Wanted,” which follows a Washington Post journalist thrown unexpectedly into the dangerous world of arms dealing.
