Tina Lawson Explains Why Beyonce Hated Her Wedding Dress

Tina Knowles*In a recent “Today” show interview, Beyonce’s mother, Tina Lawson, who designed many of Destiny’s Child’s gaudy ensembles, admitted that Beyonce wasn’t thrilled with her wedding gown. “She was so sweet to let me do that. She came back later one day and she said, ‘You know, when my daughter gets married, I’m going to let her pick out her own dress. Maybe she wasn’t so excited about it at the time, but she’s a sweetheart,” Lawson said of Bey letting her down gently.

Beyonce acknowledged Tina’s longtime influence over her style choice when she credited her and her grandmother after accepting the 2016 CFDA Fashion Icon Award, per Rolling Out. “I feel so much love and I feel so proud right now,” Bey said while accepting the award in a pinstriped, crystal-embellished Givenchy suit and a “Formation”-style wide-brim hat. “Thank you guys for this incredible honor.”

“As long as I can remember, fashion has always been a part of my life. It’s effect on me actually started before I was born,” Queen Bey recalled. “Most of you guys don’t know this, but my grandmother was a seamstress. My grandparents did not have enough money, they could not afford my mother’s Catholic school tuition. So my grandmother sewed clothes for the priests and the nuns and made the uniform for the students in exchange for my mother’s education,” she said.

“When we were starting out in Destiny’s Child, high-end labels, they didn’t really want to dress four black country-curvy girls,” Beyonce said. “And we couldn’t afford designer dresses and couture. My mother was rejected from every showroom in New York. But like my grandmother, she used her talent and her creativity to give her children their dreams.”

Beyonce’s mother also designed her prom dress, her first CFDA dress and her first Grammy dress.
