The Pulse of Entertainment: ‘Rickey Smiley for Real’ Premieres on TV One May 10

*“I thought his life was entertaining…I didn’t know he was a single father,” said Roger Bobb executive producer of  “Rickey Smiley for Real,” a docu-series of the comedian/actor/syndicated radio personality, which premieres on TV One Tuesday May 10, 2016 at 8 p.m. ET. Smiley serves as executive producer.

“Rickey Smiley for Real” starts its second season with the first season reaching 8.2 million households. The unscripted reality show follows Smiley as he raises his two biological and eight adopted children, hosts his syndicated “The Rickey Smiley Morning Show” in Dallas, Texas at 97.9 The Beat (KBFB), his career as a stand-up comedian, as well as his acting and other ventures. Viewers will get to see some of his friends and radio show co-hosts such as rapper DaBrat.

“There were no concerns,” Rickey said when asked about any apprehensions by him or his children in putting their lives on national television. “Me and Roger of Bobcat (which produces the show) were having a conversation about my life and we thought a real look at my life and career…would be interesting.”

The comedian juggles his children who are of different ages with different situations and different dilemmas that need his attention, a weekday morning show to host and he is maintaining his comedic and acting career that current have him appearing as a featured columnist on Fox Network’s nationally syndicated celebrity news show “Dish Nation” (2012-present).

“I have children I’ve adopted and biological children, I have a big family,” Smiley said. “I wanted to capture some of that stuff, there is so much content. We thought it was a great idea and here we are.”

The first season of “Rickey Smiley for Real” scored as the 2nd highest in programs on cable for Blacks ages 25 -54. This season viewers will see him do his feature columnist thing on “Dish Nation,” collaborate with Kelly Price on a song, tour with comedian Mike Epps and take a trip to the Bahamas. The viewers will also get to see his interaction with sons Brandon, Malik and Craig, and daughters D’Essence and Aaryn.

In his very early twenties Rickey Smiley started his career as a stand-up who by 2002 was starring in Ice Cube’s Friday After Next feature film and in 2007 starring in First Friday. As a comedian he toured or was opening act for such comedian heavy weights as Steve Harvey and George Wallace. He went on to host BET’s “Comic View, Showtimes’ “Def Comedy Jam,” “Showtime at the Apollo,” HBO’s “Snaps,” “The Nashville Network,” “Uptown Comedy Club,” and “Comic Escape.” The Birmingham, Alabama native starred on a TV One sitcom “Rickey Smiley Show” from 2012 to 2014, and the next year in 2015 he launched the “Rickey Smiley for Real” docu-series.

TV One is owned by Radio One, who produces “The Rickey Smiley Morning Show” (2008) through their company Syndicated One, and reaches 57 million households.
