Spike Lee Still Skipping Oscars, Praises Academy’s Diversity Efforts

spike lee*Spike Lee has his mind made up about this year’s Oscars and he’s not about to change it.

No matter what the Academy does.

The Associated Press reports that Lee praised the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences taking steps to increase diversity within its membership as it looks to the future. On Friday Jan. 22), the organization announced that it would double the number of its female and minority members by 2020. In addition, the Academy stated that other changes would implement other changes in an effort to bolter diversity among its members, which are mostly white and male.

Lee thinks the changes could help: “It’s a start,” said Lee, who believes the changes could help.

While he applauds Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs and the organization’s board of governors for “trying to do the right thing,” the cloud of the all-white Oscar nominations in the major acting categories for the second straight year still rubs Lee the way. As a result, the “Chi-Raq” filmmaker maintains his intent to skip the Oscars as he opts to see his beloved New York Knicks play on Hollywood’s biggest night on Feb. 28.

“We have principles,” Lee said in an interview with the AP. “I commend the Academy for what they’ve done. But that does not change our mind. The Knicks will be victorious – I hope. I’ll be at the Garden.”

As for where he’ll be when he watches the game, Lee’s answer is a no-brainer.

“My wife and I will be in my courtside seats,” he said.
