NewsOne Now Debuts Extended Broadcast: Trump Attacks and Defends Russian Hacking Stories

WASHINGTON, D.C. – This morning on NewsOne Now, Host and Managing Editor Roland S. Martin spoke with U.S. Representative Andre Carson (D-IN) about President-Elect Trump’s comments on the CIA’s secret assessment into Russia’s interference with the U.S. Presidential Election.

Rep. Carson said the CIA’s conclusion regarding Russia’s interference doesn’t shock him, but Trump’s slight involvement in the scandal should not be taken lightly.

“It’s clear, Roland, that Russia was interested in raising questions about the validity of the electoral system and supporting Mr. Trump’s candidacy,” said Rep. Carson. “You know, even leading up to the election, as you’ve covered, there has been widespread speculation in many Intel communities that Russia would effectively attempt to hack voting systems to more explicitly change the outcomes of the election. And today President Obama has initiated a formal investigation into the interference to assess fully to determine how serious it was and if it impacted the outcome of the election. I think what is significant, first and foremost is that we have to remember that this is not necessarily an activation of Donald Trump was encouraged or involved in, but anyone engaged in this type of behavior should obviously be held accountable.”

Rep. Carson goes on to address spectators who place blame on President Obama for the hacking scandal.

“To cast this, Roland, as a false flag operation, I think is unacceptable. People who’ve made this accusation have no position in government or at least in the way of assessing support this claim. I think it’s very dangerous for us to jump the immediate conclusion that the President is involved in some kind of conspiracy to deceive the American people.”

NewsOne Now introduced “Wisdom from Next Generation Voices,” a new, daily series on how African Americans need to move forward under a Trump presidency.  Today the segment featured panelist Brittany Packnett, vice president of national community alliances for Teach for America and co-founder of Campaign Zero. In their conversation, fellow panelist and Maryland Republican Party Vice Chair Eugene Craig, III suggested Packnett reach out to the Trump Administration to enforce a change in criminal justice reform. In opposition, Packnett believes that it is impossible to create change with an administration that has often compared Campaign Zero and Black Lives Matter to the Ku Klux Klan.

When President Barack Obama was candidate Barack Obama his promises were not rooted in my oppression. His promises were not rooted in bigotry,” said Packnett. “His promises were not rooted in rape culture. His behavior was not rooted in rape culture. His behavior was not rooted in sexism. However the candidate that has currently made it to the White House – or at least according to the Electoral College has currently made it to the White House – his promises were rooted in all of those things and then some. And then he has proceeded to hire and promises to nominate multiple people that can advance that particular agenda. And so at the end of the day, I’m going to look previous behaviors to tell me how you’re going to operate in the future. That’s common sense. That’s what my mother taught me and that’s what I’m going to abide by.”
