*Though it is only a bandage on a wound that will not be healed anytime soon, one family may be able to take some solace in the fact that the four men who harrassed and ultimately killed their loved one, has been ordered by a judge to pay restitution.
The Justice Department ordered Deryl Paul Dedmon, John Aaron Rice, Dylan Wade Butler and William Kirk Montgomery, each of whom were convicted and sentenced to prison, to pay restitution in the amount of $840,000 in connection with the killing of James Craig Anderson, the 49-year-old victim of a series of hate crimes committed by them.
The four men were convicted in 2012, of violating the “Matthew Shepard” and “James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Act.” You may recall, teen Matthew Shepherd’s death was the result of a homophobic hate crime; while the death of James Byrd, Jr., a 49-year-old black man, was racially motivated when he was dragged at the rear of a pickup truck driven by three white men.
The men in this case targeted Anderson in the parking lot of a motel in Jackson, Miss. Then two of them brutally beat him, and another hit him with his pickup truck.
