Detroit Woman’s Halloween Display Depicts Real-Life Horrors

Police Shootings Decor

*In what is now becoming an annual tradition, Detroit native Larethia Haddon has filled her yard with decorations that depict real-life horrors. This year, victims of police shootings, neighborhood violence and the Flint water crisis are on display. Last year, she used the holiday to make a statement by laying a (fake) dead body on her doorstep.

“The kids aren’t afraid of the boogey man anymore,” Haddon told WJBK. “They say grandma, we’re scared to go outside and play.”

Six dummies decorate her lawn to represent violence, discrimination and tragic encounters with police.

“A lady was standing out here yesterday looking at the scene and she was just crying, just breaking down in tears,” Haddon said. “So I came out and I just held her.”

The display is only available for viewing during the day, Haddon said, and every day it draws a crowd.

“It’s definitely thought-provoking,” said local resident Kevin Mays. “It’s addressing a whole lot of issues that are going on right now. ”

“At first I did think something was wrong but when I looked at it, and started to read, I’m like, oh, Flint water, I get it,” Alesia Diaz said. ” A book bag bombing, I get it.”

Some residents thought the dummies were real and called police, but that’s not going to stop Haddon from creating the grisly scenes to convey a message.

“We’re trying to do something positive instead of just having a dead body laying in the yard,” she said. “Want to get people to be a little more focused on the issues, what’s going on in the world. We need to stick together more. We need to come together. And if we don’t, this scene in my yard is going to be reality every single day.”
