*LaVonte Dell just knew he was facing with a steep fine for not having his 3-year-old daughter in a car seat when he was pulled over. But to his shock, the officer instead asked Dell to follow him to the nearest Walmart, where he reached into his own pocket to buy Dell’s daughter a car seat.
Sharing his story on Facebook, Dell said he was initially pulled over Monday in the Michigan town of Westland because his window tint was too dark. Officer Joshua Scaglione noticed his daughter wasn’t in a carseat and told Dell to step out of the car.
He asked him why his daughter wasn’t strapped in properly and LaVonte said he’s barely making ends meet right now.
Instead of giving Dell a ticket for tinted windows AND for not having his daughter in a carseat, Scaglione told LaVonte to follow him to Walmart.
“Do you know this white police officer told me to follow him to Walmart on Ford Road and he purchased my daughter a car seat with his own money? If you would’ve seen us in Walmart, you would’ve thought we were best friends. It was like night and day,” Dell wrote on FB.
He also commented on how they must’ve looked – a black man with tattoos walking alongside a white cop in Walmart: “You got me, hella tatts, walking side by side with a white officer, Westland at that. I’ve been calling all day trying to get his name because I was so in shock. I didn’t even look at his name tag.”
Dell wrote of Scaglione’s intentions, “He said I’m just doing my job. What good would giving you a ticket do besides putting you further in the hole making it harder on you to come up.”
