*As the world mourned the death of Prince on Thursday, pop star Justin Bieber made a comment that was roundly roasted as massive shade against the icon’s legacy.

Bieber’s comment was in response to songwriter Andrew Watt’s heartfelt tribute to Prince on Instagram.

“Today waking up to this news I am truly beside myself…devastated…the last of the greatest living performers…my guitar idol,” Watt wrote Thursday alongside a photo of himself playing the guitar while wearing a Prince T-shirt. “His connection to ALL his instruments yielded a sexual transcending aura.”

This past Tuesday night before my show I was picking out an outfit…I was so tired from the past week of endless traveling and gigging that I grabbed my Prince shirt and said fuck it I’m gonna channel the purple one tonight…I didn’t shower after the gig out of pure exhaustion…I went to sleep in that shirt and then I wore it again all day yesterday…today waking up to this news I am truly beside myself…devastated…the last of the greatest living performers…my guitar idol…his connection to ALL his instruments yielded a sexual transcending aura and the world is just less fucking cool without him walking on it… “Electric word life It means forever and that’s a mighty long time But I’m here to tell you There’s something else… The after world” #RIPPRINCE

As Watt’s followers commented with their condolences, Bieber jumped in to take issue with his comment that Prince was “…the last of the greatest living performers.”

“Well not the last greatest living performer,” posted Bieber, 22.

Now was he referring to Prince’s music eventually being topped, referring to himself as one day topping Prince or quibbling with Watt’s word “living,” to describe Prince, since the legend is now deceased? In other words…

Of course the comment has since been deleted, but the backlash was already on:
