*British tabloid The Sun is reporting that Idris Elba was secretly married ten years ago…several years after his four-year marriage to Hanne “Kim” Norgaard ended in 2003.
According to the tabloid, Idris married a real estate lawyer named Sonya Nicole Hamlin in Las Vegas. Elba, 43, had just finished his role as Stringer Bell in HBO’s “The Wire” in 2005 when his manager, a college friend of Sonya’s, introduced them. After living together in Maryland, where “The Wire” was filmed, they reportedly chose to marry in Las Vegas at the Little White Wedding Chapel on April 9, 2006.
It was initially believed that the couple got the wedding annulled after 24 hours, but The Sun claims they actually stayed married for four months. Court papers obtained by the tabloid Sunday show it was annulled on August 11, with disagreements over having children partly to blame.
Per The Sun:
Sonya, a real estate lawyer, paid just over $100 to file the divorce in Maryland on June 6, 2006, but state rules mean couples first have to be separated for a year.
So she hired a lawyer in Nevada, and claimed she had been too drunk on her wedding day.
A source said: “That’s what you do to get out of it.”
A pal said: “One of the reasons it ended was her practice was doing well here but Idris wanted to be in LA.
“At some point he had a choice between being a husband or a heartbreaker. He chose his career over her.”
The pair had a whirlwind romance and a friend said: “It’s a heartbreak story. She cared about him and when they broke up it tore her up.”
