*If you missed it, Tisha Campbell-Martin performed her single “Steel Here” for the first time on FOX 11’s “Good Day LA” this morning.

Afterwards the actress/singer opened up about forgiving the man who sexually assaulted her when she was three years old, and that the song embodies the freedom that forgiveness gave her.

ON HER NEW SINGLE ‘STEEL HERE’
“Well, you know what happened recently, I released some music. And my album is gunna be coming out soon. And the first single we decided to release was for ‘Steel Here’ and I did the entire album with my producer B. Slade and when we started writing it, it was actually a very positive song about the trials and tribulations that you go through in life in general, and how you don’t look at it as something that is bad, you look at it as a learning experience and that’s a lesson. But, when we decided to do a video, my art is a way of communication, right? So the directress, Viktorija Pashuta said ‘Give me something that you’ve overcome, five things and we’ll pick one.’ And that was the one.”

ON CAMPBELL-MARTIN FORGIVING THE MAN WHO SEXUALLY ABUSED HER
“I decided to do it about, there was a five page letter that I had just received a year ago, from the person that sexually assaulted me when I was three years old. And the apology letter when I received it, it gave me so much freedom, because I forgave immediately, not only him, but to a certain extent, myself, and that’s hard to explain – not that I did anything wrong.”

ON WHETHER OR NOT CAMPBELL-MARTIN WAS PREVIOUSLY CARRYING THE BAGGAGE OF THE SEXUALLY ASSAULT ABUSE WITH HER
“You know what, I didn’t think that I was carrying anything around. But when you feel that amount of freedom when you do actually let it go, there’s a breathing thing that happens.”

ON CAMPBELL-MARTIN FORGIVING HERSELF FOR WHAT HAPPENED TO HER
“So when I say ‘Forgive myself’ it’s not for anything else other than, as an evolved person, you try to look at things for what it really is, and I looked at it as, we are all spiritual beings having human experiences. So, in those moments, even in a person’s worst moments, I felt the need and the freedom to forgive.”

ON HOW THE ASSAULT IMPACTED CAMPBELL-MARTIN’S RELATIONSHIP WITH HER SON
“It did. You think you have it together, but there are moments where you know – like when I was breastfeeding my first son, it was really hard for me because I felt like I was doing something wrong, so I’d be crying, and he’d be crying, because babies can feel that kind of thing – and that’s how it would come out in little spurts like that. So for the most part I was pretty clear on knowing that I didn’t do anything wrong.”

ON THE MESSAGE OF THE VIDEO FOR ‘STEEL HERE’
“When I started to do this particular video, it was a message of freedom. You see me in this long 9 foot black dress and the dancers coming out of me, and that represented negative emotions, guilt, any kind of negative feelings, anger.”

“The apology letter, I brought the letter to the set and they wrote it on my chest.”
