*Here’s what’s happening in the political world as Iowa voters cast votes the Democratic and Republican caucuses in that state tonight.

On the GOP side, CBS News projects Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, as the winner of the Iowa Republican caucus.

With 99 percent of the votes counted, Cruz came out on top with 28 percent. Despite a strong showing in late polls, businessman Donald Trump barely eked out a second-place finish with 24 percent, as Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Florida, finished with 23 percent of the vote in a surprisingly strong night.

As CBS News Digital Political Reporter Sean Gallitz, wrote, Rubio’s strategy in Iowa appeared to be plucked from the playbook of Mitt Romney, the 2012 GOP nominee.
