*There’s sad news for fans and family of radio man Bobby “The Mighty Burner” Bennett who was radio legend in the Washington, DC area for several decades.
As of this posting, it’s not certain, but it’s believed Bennett died from complications of stroke he suffered several weeks ago. He had been hospitalized in Florida where was living at the time of his passing.
Bennett – who was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA – was 72.
Bennett and his radio nick name, “The Mighty Burner,” came into prominence from his days as an super popular afternoon-drive DJ on radio station WOL where he spun records from the late 60s until the early 80s. Later he transitioned to sports announcing and did a stint as program director of Howard University’s WHUR-FM.
Bennett also hosted an R&B show on WPFW-FM and is credited with creating the “Soul Street” channel on Sirius XM. In addition, he co-authored a book about Motown.
Bobby Bennett is survived by his wife Connie, son Eric, daughter Amy and grandchildren.
As of this posting, funeral services are scheduled to be held in the D.C. area late next week.
