*Oops. It appears the box office estimates for “Straight Outta Compton” were off … on the low side.

Earlier it was reported that the film from Universal Pictures had brought in $56.1 million in box office receipts. Well, it seems the earlier estimates were off by about $4 million. Now, the studio is predicting that the opening weekend take will be at least $60.2 million!

Hey, we’re talking tentpole kinda numbers. “Ant-Man” did $57.2M, “Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation did $55.5M and as Deadline noted, they had 1200 more screens on average than “Compton” did with 2,757.

Another key reason the film was so successful, according to experts, is due to a marketing campaign that made sure to include social media efforts by the films talent/producers as well as a concerted music industry tie in utilizing Apple/Dr. Dre’s Beats and Interscope Records.

During the 1980s and 1990s, music was always a key ancillary and marketing tool, particularly with song tie-ins. We occasionally see this nowadays, but Uni clearly has not forgotten about how powerful recording industry tie-ins are: Remember, the studio strategically used Beyonce’s Instagram to tease the first trailer, which yielded 100M views across all platforms.

Now that it’s all said and done, “Straight Outta Compton,” had the 5th largest August opening ever behind M. Night Shyamalan’s “Signs” ($60.1M), “Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes” ($54.8M) and “G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra” ($54.7M).
