President Obama Speaks to NAACP; Announces Push for Sweeping Criminal Justice Reform

president obama

*The president is taking his attacks on racism that has effected African Americans disproportionately one step further. President Obama spoke at the NAACP convention and announced several powerful proposed changes to the criminal justice system. While speaking at the NAACP convention he stated “We keep more people behind bars than the top 35 European countries combined,” President Barack Obama

In one of the lengthiest speeches on criminal justice he has made during his presidency. President Barack Obama stated he will look for reductions or eliminating of mandatory minimum sentencing, an evaluation of the effects of solitary confinement and a stronger focus on rehabilitation programs, like jobs training. He also wants states to evaluate convicted felons voting rights prohibitions.

Earlier this year I wrote a piece that showed this comparison of prison rates in the  U.S. vs. World, titled “The Black Male Incarceration Problem Is Real and It’s Catastrophic” by Antonio Moore.esq

Excerpt
“The Census estimates that approximately 18,508,926 people in the U.S. population are black males, of all ages…The Bureau of Justice Statistics’ National Prisoner Statistics Program reports that in that same year, 526,000 were in state or federal prisons, and, as of mid-year 2013, 219,660 were in local jails, making for a total of about 745,000 behind bars”

To give a lens for viewing this data India is a country of 1.2 Billion people, the country in total only has around 380,000 prisoners. In fact, there are more African American men incarcerated in the U.S. than the total prison populations in India, Argentina, Canada, Lebanon, Japan, Germany, Finland, Israel and England combined.Prison Chart
