Over 100 Killed in Deadly Crane Collapse in Mecca, Saudi Arabia (Watch Footage of the Incident)

mecca crane accident

*If you haven’t heard, in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, a construction crane crashed through the roof of the Grand Mosque killing at least 107 people.

The incident is being blamed on a powerful storm that also injured at least 238 others. The accident happened 10 days before the start of the Hajj, which is an annual pilgrimage expected to bring 2 million people to Mecca.

New images show blood stained the white marble floors. Cellphone video showed survivors — in shock — walking among the dead searching for and pulling out any survivors.

The victims were said to include worshipers from Iran, Turkey, Afghanistan, Egypt and Pakistan.

On Saturday, Saudi’s King Salman visited the site and then met survivors of the accident at a hospital.

“We will investigate all the reasons [of the collapse] and afterwards declare the results to the citizens,” the official Saudi news agency quoted him as saying.

The Grand Mosque, known as the Masjid al-Haram, is the largest mosque in the world and surrounds Islam’s holiest place, the Kaaba.

One would think that an event this horrific would give pause to anyone planning to be in attendance at the yearly pilgrimage. However,  Faten Abdelfattah from Texas, is not changing her plans to attend.

“My main concern is safety issues that arise with such a big crowd,” Abdelfattah, 32, told CNN. “It’s a reminder to put my trust in God and that I can’t stop death if it’s my time whether I’m there or sleeping safely in bed.”

She’s putting her faith in the Saudi government to take extra precautions in light of the tragic accident.

“I feel more comfortable after learning that they prevented pilgrims from entering the [site of the Kaaba] to check on construction equipment,” she told CNN. “I believe they have the pilgrims’ best interests in mind and after the incident they won’t leave anything to chance.”
