*Ja Rule says he wasn’t really feeling a reality series when he was first approached about doing one several years ago.

But as more and more rappers of a certain age began inviting TV cameras into their homes – such as Coolio, Rev. Run, T.I. and Snoop Dogg – the 39-year-old hip hop star eventually opened up to the concept.

“I started to see reality TV develop and grow into what television really is now. It’s really the new sitcom, so I was very intrigued by that,” the rapper told reporters Wednesday at the Television Critics Association Press Tour in Beverly Hills.

“Follow the Rules,” with Queen Latifah and Irv Gotti among the executive producers, will follow the rapper at home with his wife Aisha, their three kids, his mama and his mother-in-law.

In teasers for the series, Ja is seen fishing with his kids, ribbing his youngest son Jordie over liking a girl, ribbing his other son Jeffrey Jr. about his choice in clothing, and being punked by his daughter Brittney, a sophomore in college.

“We’re in a new age of parenting,” Gotti told journalists. “When I grew up and when our generation grew up, we may have listened to different things than our parents. So now, present day, with Ja and his kids and me and my kids or whatever, it’s weird because we all listen to the same thing.

“We all talk the same lingo. The hip hop culture has destroyed the age barrier. It’s helping destroy the race and color barrier. And it’s also destroying the age barrier where we speak the same talk, we talk the same language, and it’s a better communication. And I think “Follow The Rules” is going to exemplify that at a magnitude where you see it.”
