Ava DuVernay Continues Oprah Alliance With New OWN Series Inspired by ‘Queen Sugar’ Novel

oprah-winfrey ava-duvernay*Ava DuVernay’s alliance with Oprah Winfrey is continuing beyond the Oscar-nominated drama “Selma.”

A press release sent by the OWN network details plans for the Winfrey and DuVernay to join forces for a new series inspired by Natalie Baszile’s novel, “Queen Sugar.” The bestseller centers on a Charley Bordelon a woman living an upscale life in Los Angeles whose world is changed when she’s left a sugar cane farm in Louisiana after her father’s death. As a result, Charley has to relocate her child and life as she deals with a new environment that includes the idea of rebuilding the 800-acre sugar farm from scratch. In addition, Charley has family drama on her plate, in addition to finding romance and her Southern roots.

The OWN drama will be written, directed and executive produced by DuVernay while Winfrey serves as co-executive producer and appears on the show in a recurring role.

“I love this book and immediately saw it as a series for OWN,” Lady O said about why she wanted “Queen Sugar” to appear on her network. “The story’s themes of reinventing your life, parenting alone, family connections and conflicts, and building new relationships are what I believe will connect our viewers to this show.”

Despite her work on the big screen, DuVernay has a history of work on small screen with directing the “Vermont Is For Lovers, Too” episode from season three of “Scandal” and documentaries such as My Mic Sounds Nice: The Truth About Women in Hip Hop” and “Venus Vs.” for ESPN’s “Nine for IX” series. and the “Vermont Is For Lovers, Too” episode of “Scandal” from season three.

“From the moment I was introduced to the book, I was captivated by the idea of a modern woman wrestling with identity, family, culture and the echoes of history,” DuVernay stated in the release about her new project. “To bring this kind of storytelling to life alongside Oprah for her network is wildly wonderful. I’m excited about what’s in store.”

Taking to social media, DuVernay tweeted her thanks to Winfrey for taking a chance on her in order that she may make similar moves like the directors who inspire her, who have helmed acclaimed work for television:
