*Before Terrence Howard was cast as the lead in Fox’s “Empire,” he booked a major role in the network’s summer mystery drama “Wayward Pines,” set in a small Idaho town that’s apparently the Roach Motel of cities – people can come in, but they can’t get out.
“How do I get out of here?” asks Secret Service agent Ethan Burke (Matt Dillon), who tries to leave town.
Howard, as Wayward Pines’ Sheriff Arnold Pope, says: “You don’t.”
Pope takes his job seriously – protecting his impressionable citizens from outside drama and enforcing an ordinance that requires everyone to be happy. He also keeps an eye on Burke, making sure his investigation into the fate of two federal agents doesn’t get anywhere near the truth.
Filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan, an executive producer and director of the anthology series, says the show will be groundbreaking for its unprecedented mid-season genre shift — moving from mystery to something else entirely, which he is keeping under wraps.

Matt Damon, Melissa Leo, Carla Gugino, Juliette Lewis and Shannyn Sossamon also star in “Wayward Pines,” premiering May 14 on FOX.
