*You are one of the lucky ones who scored tickets to the upcoming Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, and you cannot wait to head to Indio, California, for a serious concert fix. You are probably busy planning which stages and artists you want to see, and you already have reservations at a nearby hotel. Before you leave for your much-anticipated musical vacation, it’s also important to learn some tips and tricks that will make your time at Coachella as fun and safe as possible.

Drink Plenty of H2O

Coachella is outside in the desert, and it can get plenty warm. Plus, you’ll be dancing around enjoying yourself, so be careful and avoid getting dehydrated. Have water with you at all times and make an effort to sip about a bottle’s worth of agua every two hours. If you are planning to drink beer or other alcoholic beverages, try to wait until after dusk when it starts to cool off; this will also help to keep dehydration at bay.

See a Souvenir? Buy It

As Tourist Meets Traveler notes, Coachella is chock-full of great merchandise and souvenirs, and things sell out fast. So if you spot a T-shirt or other goodie that you want, buy it on the first day. The worst time to shop is in the evening, so grab a bottle of water, apply some extra sunscreen and stand in line for awhile with other music fans.

Embrace your Inner Free Spirit

If you have always dreamed of coming out of your shell, Coachella is the perfect place to do it. It is almost impossible to be too wacky or weird at the music festival and so feel free to show up at least one day with face paint, a cool mask, or some type of costume. Speaking of shells, MorphCostumes sells a full line of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle costumes for adults, or if you want something a bit lighter, you could always go as Fred Flintstone. His flowy caveman garb will help you to stay cool in the warm sun.

Carry the 3 S’s

Coachella can be dusty and hot. Keep a scarf tucked in your purse or back pocket and use it to cover your face in case a dust storm blows through. Sunglasses will protect your eyes from both the sun and dust, and slather on plenty of sunscreen before leaving your hotel and then throughout the days at the festival. It doesn’t matter how dark your skin is, the sun is damaging. Opt for high SPF and be careful it’s not expired before you apply.

Plan Meet-up Spots Ahead of Time

Once you arrive at the festival, decide on where your group should meet if you get separated. There will be so many people at Coachella, cell towers can get overloaded, so don’t plan on relying on your smartphone to text or call your friends; instead, designate a meeting area, like “the beer garden closest to the west parking lot.”

Pack Baby Wipes

As anyone who has ever used a porta potty in the hot sun knows, they’re gross and they usually don’t have sinks for washing up. Bring along a small travel package of baby wipes and use them to wash your hands. Wipes also handy for cleaning up after a dusty day, particularly if you are camping.
