Three Memphis Officers Acquitted in Tyre Nichols’ Death
*Today (05-07-25), a Tennessee jury acquitted three former Memphis police officers in the death of Tyre Nichols. The ex-officers Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, and Justin Smith were cleared of all state charges, including second-degree murder, in the January 2023 beating that shocked the nation. The jury, which appeared to be all white, deliberated for 8.5 hours over two days after a nine-day trial in Shelby County.
The verdict drew emotional reactions inside the courtroom. The acquitted officers hugged their attorneys, while relatives of the defendants wept with joy. One family member even shouted, “Thank you, Jesus!” outside the courtroom. But the reaction from Nichols’ family and civil rights advocates was heartbreak and outrage, NPR is reporting.
Remembering the Tragic Death of Tyre Nichols
Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old Black man, was stopped by Memphis police on January 7, 2023, for alleged reckless driving — a claim the police chief later said was unsupported. After being pulled from his car, pepper-sprayed, and tasered, Nichols fled on foot. Five officers caught up with him near his home, where they beat him severely as he called for his mother. Nichols died three days later from blunt force trauma.
Body camera and pole camera footage of the beating sparked national protests and renewed calls for police reform. The five officers, all Black and part of the now-disbanded Scorpion Unit, were fired and faced both federal and state charges. Nichols’ family has since filed a $550 million civil lawsuit against the city and police chief.

Why the State Trial Ended in Acquittal
Prosecutors argued that the officers used excessive force out of frustration when Nichols fled, failing in their duty to protect him and delaying needed medical help. They pointed to damning comments captured on video, like Bean saying Nichols was “eating” the blows and Smith admitting they hit him with “so many pieces.”
The defense countered that Nichols resisted arrest, escalating the situation, and argued the officers were following police training. They suggested the officers suffered from “tunnel vision” due to pepper spray and pinned primary responsibility on another officer, Emmitt Martin III, who admitted to head strikes.
Federal Convictions Remain Despite State Acquittal
Although cleared in state court, the three officers were convicted in October 2024 on federal witness tampering charges for covering up details of the beating. Haley was also found guilty of violating Nichols’ civil rights. Sentencing is set for January 22, 2025, with the officers facing significant prison time.
Two other officers, Desmond Mills Jr. and Emmitt Martin III, pleaded guilty to federal charges and testified against their former colleagues. Mills faces up to 15 years in prison, while Martin could face up to 40 years. Both have agreed to plead guilty to pending state charges.
Why the Tyre Nichols Case Still Matters
The acquittal has been described by civil rights attorney Ben Crump as a “devastating miscarriage of justice.” Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy said Nichols’ family was “devastated” by the verdict but reaffirmed his office’s commitment to police accountability.

The case reignites national debates about police reform, especially as public support has waned since the 2020 George Floyd protests. The U.S. Justice Department is currently investigating the Memphis Police Department’s practices, including potential racial discrimination and use of force. Reform advocates argue that cases like Nichols’ show the urgent need for change, even as political momentum shifts toward empowering law enforcement.
