*I learned about the airplane crash in D.C. when I started getting texts and calls from family and friends trying to make sure I was not working the flight that had just collided with a helicopter and crashed into the Potomac River. I wasn’t, but I could have been. Most people know I’m a flight attendant and have been for going on 13 years. Every time I go to work, I realize anything could happen.
In the commercial airline industry, we depend on TSA to screen everybody who plans to board the flight to prevent weapons and other potentially dangerous items from getting on board. We depend on ground crews to make sure nothing is transported that could cause a safety hazard. Passengers depend on the flight crew to get them to their destinations safely, and pilots depend on air traffic control for safe takeoffs and landings.
Based on the latest reports this flight crew aboard American Airlines flight 5342 did everything right, but as they were landing a military helicopter flew into the flight path of the airplane and collided with it, causing an explosion. My condolences go out to the families of everyone affected by this tragedy. It’s another reminder that – as prepared as we try to be – some things are out of our control.
Placing blame for the plane crash on a specific workgroup without facts, logic, or respect for the process, however, is within our control. Yet, that never stops Donald Trump from opening his mouth. His current cabinet is full of people who are sorely unqualified for their positions, yet they’re sailing through the approval process anyway. He should be the last person talking about how unqualified someone else might be. Let’s talk about it.
