*President Donald Trump hosted a reception at the White House on Thursday to honor Black History Month, even as his administration continues to dismantle diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives.
The event in the East Room drew a predominantly Black audience of donors, influencers, and political figures, who welcomed Trump alongside champion golfer Tiger Woods, which is ironic since he claims to not be Black but “Cablinasian.”
Trump, who has already taken action to terminate DEI programs he described as “immense public waste and shameful discrimination,” did not address these efforts during the ceremony. Instead, he focused on appreciating the contributions of Black Americans throughout history, calling them “great, great people” and emphasizing their impact on the nation’s journey to greatness.
Despite the ongoing DEI controversy, Trump claimed significant accomplishments for the Black community, reiterating his oft-repeated assertion that he has achieved more for Black Americans than any president since Abraham Lincoln. Critics from both parties challenge this claim, pointing to his previous controversial remarks and actions on race.

In stark contrast to the celebratory event, White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller continued to advocate against DEI programs, arguing that they have harmed the economy and public safety. Miller’s assertions, lacking evidence, were highlighted hours before the Black History Month celebration took place.
The reception showcased Trump’s electoral strength among Black men; a growing demographic for him, as he won about 3 in 10 of their votes in 2024. High-profile Black figures, including HUD Secretary Scott Turner and Sen. Tim Scott, attended the event, underscoring this support.
Jon Ponder, a recipient of Trump’s 2020 pardon and founder of Hope for Prisoners, expressed a desire for Trump to build on criminal justice reform efforts started during his first term.
Ponder, who also attended the White House event, remarked, “Black history is American history, right?” highlighting the integral role of Black Americans in the nation’s history and future.
