*Nearly four decades after Mel Brooks co-wrote, produced, and directed “Spaceballs,” the beloved 1987 MGM space opera parody that took aim at “Star Wars,” “Star Trek,” “Alien,” “The Wizard of Oz,” and “Planet of the Apes” among others, a sequel has been confirmed.
The original film earned a mixed critical reception when it opened on June 24, 1987, but time has been kind — it has since developed a passionate cult audience that never stopped asking for more. That ask has finally been answered with “Spaceballs: The New One.”
Amazon MGM Studios brought the news to CinemaCon on April 15, where original cast members joined their new co-stars on stage to screen footage and unveil the title, USA Today reports. Brooks delivered his announcement via pre-recorded video, poking fun at the long-rumored subtitle “The Search for More Money.”
“Because after all these years, I found the money. It was in my basement,” he said, adding that the new film stays true to the spirit of the first. He wrapped with his now-classic sendoff: “May the Schwartz be with you.”
The returning cast brings together Rick Moranis, Bill Pullman, Daphne Zuniga, George Wyner, and Brooks, a reunion that spans nearly 40 years. For Moranis, who terrorized the galaxy as the villainous Dark Helmet, the film represents a significant milestone: his return to a live-action theatrical release after stepping away from the industry for close to three decades.
Newcomers Josh Gad, Keke Palmer, Lewis Pullman, and Anthony Carrigan round out the ensemble, though the details of their characters are being held in strict confidence. Gad, who co-wrote and co-produced, shared his excitement on Instagram two years ago, describing the screenplay as “the funniest and best thing I’ve ever worked on.”
Directed by Josh Greenbaum, “Spaceballs: The New One” arrives in theaters April 23, 2027.
