*Director Ryan Coogler’s latest project, “Sinners,” is doing more than exceeding box office expectations; it’s making history.
Led by Michael B. Jordan, who plays twin brothers, the film marks a bold pivot for both the director and star. Set in the racially turbulent South of 1932, “Sinners” follows the twins as they return to their hometown in hopes of a fresh start, only to find themselves facing a darkness greater than they imagined. As they open a juke joint for a night of music and drinks, a darker presence crashes the party—vampires.
According to The Independent, Coogler’s film has become the first horror movie in the 47-year history of CinemaScore to receive a perfect A rating–surpassing Jordan Peele’s “Get Out,” which earned an A-, and “Hereditary,” which scored a D+. It’s an accolade that reflects the film’s blend of social commentary, suspense, and emotional depth.
Early screenings lit a fire under critics, pushing “Sinners” to a near-perfect 98% on Rotten Tomatoes with over 240 reviews.
With a $100 million budget and shot in IMAX, “Sinners” launched with a surprising $48 million domestic opening, surpassing projections and edging out other major releases like “A Minecraft Movie.” It now sits at a global total of $63.5 million, boosted by strong word-of-mouth and stellar reviews.

Featuring an original score by Ludwig Göransson and a supporting cast including Hailee Steinfeld and Wunmi Mosaku, “Sinners” isn’t just a horror hit; it’s a cultural moment that reshapes what horror can look and feel like.
Following the massive success of his latest project, which brought in $48 million domestically and $63.5 million worldwide, Coogler shared a personal letter brimming with gratitude.
“I had the gift of the opportunity of making a film inspired by my family and my ancestry but it was always a film that we wanted to make for audiences, in theaters,” Coogler wrote. “We always had our minds on you, the audience, and felt a deep responsibility to entertain you, and move you in the way only cinema can.”
