*Quentin Tarantino fired back at Rosanna Arquette’s criticism over his use of the N-word in his movies, saying she showed a “decided lack of class.”
The Guardian reports that Tarantino questioned Arquette’s motives, saying, “I hope the publicity you’re getting from 132 different media outlets writing your name and printing your picture was worth disrespecting me and a film I remember quite clearly you were thrilled to be a part of? … After I gave you a job, and you took the money, to trash it for what I suspect is very cynical reasons shows a decided lack of class, no less honour.”
He also noted that collaboration among artists should involve mutual respect, adding, “There is supposed to be an esprit de corps between artistic colleagues. But it would appear the objective was accomplished.”
Arquette had publicly condemned Tarantino for his frequent use of the racial slur, particularly in “Pulp Fiction,” telling the Sunday Times, “I cannot stand that [Tarantino] has been given a hall pass. It’s not art, it’s just racist and creepy.”
Tarantino’s films vary widely in how frequently the slur appears. As All Hip Hop noted, “Pulp Fiction” and “The Hateful Eight” contain roughly 20 and 65 instances respectively, while “Jackie Brown” climbs past 30. “Django Unchained” represents the peak of its usage across his filmography, surpassing 100 instances. By contrast, both volumes of “Kill Bill” and “Inglourious Basterds” feature the word far less often than his other work.
Tarantino has faced repeated criticism over his use of the N-word in his films. Director Spike Lee was among the most vocal early critics, taking issue with Tarantino back in 1997 and accusing him of being “infatuated with that word.” Lee questioned Tarantino’s motivations, asking, “What does he want to be made – an honorary black man?”
Samuel L. Jackson, a frequent Tarantino collaborator who has appeared in six of his films, has been among the actors to publicly defend the director’s the use of the word.
