*Everyone loves a vigilante: From “Death Wish” to “Deadpool,” most people love it when a vigilante gets justice in the movies. When it comes to real life, not so much. Luigi Mangione is in jail right now charged with taking justice into his own hands when he allegedly murdered United Healthcare executive Brian Thompson.
The energy you give in life is the energy you get in return most of the time. So, when most of the social posts that I saw about Thompson are giving IDGAF energy at best…as if empathy is an out-of-network emotion, I understand why some people might take that position.
My mother passed away about 11 weeks ago. Our family had our own experience with how hard it was to get her insurance company to consider my mother’s personal needs over a written policy. She had a stroke on Super Bowl Sunday that left her paralyzed and unable to talk. Countless people suffer from and recover from strokes. My mother was not one of them. What did her insurance company have to do with that?
In a world where cinematic portrayals of vigilantes captivate our hearts and minds, the tragic story of Luigi Mangione reminds us that real-life justice often comes at a steep price, highlighting the deep emotional complexities surrounding loss, empathy, and the harsh realities of navigating an indifferent insurance system amidst personal tragedy.
