*As communities across the United States mark Juneteenth, food is central to the celebration.
The holiday, observed on June 19, honors the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, finally learned of their emancipation, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. With Juneteenth’s elevation to federal holiday status in 2021, the spotlight on its culinary traditions has only grown brighter.
As Delish reports, dishes served on this day are grounded in African American culinary heritage; they often feature ingredients such as cornmeal, beans, greens, and pork. Staples include fried fish, cornbread, stews, and chitterlings. The cuisine is a powerful expression of history and survival through nourishment and flavor.
The color red also plays a meaningful role in Juneteenth fare. From red velvet cake to hot links and punch, red foods are both symbolic and historical. Chef Millie Peartree describes red as “the representation of the bloodshed and resilience of enslaved people.”
Culinary historian Michael Twitty ties the tradition to African roots, specifically Yoruba and Kongo cultures, noting that many enslaved Africans brought to Texas passed through the Caribbean, where red holds cultural significance.

Prosperity meals are another important part of the Juneteenth menu. Much like the New Year’s Eve tradition of eating black-eyed peas and collard greens for good fortune, these dishes—also including cabbage, cornbread, and sweet potatoes—serve to express hope and gratitude.
“All about celebrating good luck and wishing for the best,” says lifestyle expert Michiel Perry.
Whether it’s a simple slice of homemade cornbread or a glass of Juneteenth Punch, made with cranberry juice, ginger ale, and strawberry sorbet, each dish serves as a reminder of history, resistance, and the importance of honoring those who came before.
