*UFC fighter Joshua “Josh” Hokit is standing firmly behind the controversial comment he made about Michelle Obama following his victory at Donald Trump’s UFC Freedom 250, insisting that what many viewed as an insult was actually intended as a compliment.
In a new interview on “The Ariel Helwani Show,” Hokit addressed the backlash that erupted after he declared “Michelle Obama is a man” during a post-fight celebration at the White House event.
Rather than apologize or walk back the remark, Hokit doubled down.
“I thought I was giving her a compliment,” he said.
The comments have reignited debate around the fighter’s original statement and whether his explanation makes the controversy any less offensive to those who criticized it.
Hokit’s Explanation
When Helwani noted that virtually no one interpreted the remark as a compliment, Hokit offered his reasoning.
“Michelle Obama being a man. It’s like, she knows how to deal with adversity. She knows how to work hard like a man when the times get tough,” he said.
Hokit also explained why Michelle Obama came to mind after his victory.
“I thought it was a perfect opportunity to show the world how great this country is with freedom of speech,” he said.
The fighter went on to argue that making such comments in other countries could carry far greater consequences.
“You go somewhere else in the world, and you say something like that, and you die,” he said before adding that he was “not suicidal” and was in “good spirits.”
Hokit characterized the remark as a jab aimed at a political divide he believes exists in public discourse.

No Apology Coming
If there was any expectation that Hokit might express regret after the backlash, he quickly put those hopes to rest.
“You’ll never hear me backtrack from what I say,” he said.
That declaration may prove to be the most significant part of the interview.
Public figures frequently attempt to clarify controversial remarks after public reaction sets in. Others issue apologies, explanations or statements saying their comments were misunderstood.
Hokit chose a different path.
By insisting the remark was intentional and by framing it as praise, he left little room for ambiguity about his position.
Whether supporters agree with him or critics reject his explanation, the fighter has made it clear that he stands by what he said.

Even Dana White Wasn’t On Board
The controversy has generated reactions beyond social media.
UFC President Dana White, who has long positioned himself as a strong defender of free speech, distanced himself from Hokit’s comments.
“Everyone knows my position on free speech, but I hate that kind of nonsense,” White told Time.
His response highlighted a distinction that has become central to the debate surrounding Hokit.
Supporting someone’s right to speak is not the same as endorsing what they say.
That distinction has become increasingly important as public figures use high-profile platforms to make provocative statements designed to generate attention and reaction.
More Than A Free Speech Debate
Hokit has repeatedly framed the controversy as a matter of free speech.
But for many observers, the conversation extends beyond constitutional rights.
Whatever Hokit’s motivation, the interview marks a turning point because it removes any ambiguity about intent.
He has made clear that he stands by the remark.
That clarity makes criticism not only appropriate but necessary. Public figures are free to say what they want, but the rest of the public is equally free to reject language that many critics view as demeaning, disrespectful and reflective of long-running stereotypes directed at Black women.
The issue is not free speech. Hokit has every right to say what he said.
The issue is accountability.
Once he chose to double down rather than clarify or apologize, the conversation shifted from what was said to what kind of behavior the public is willing to normalize.
By framing the comment as a compliment and insisting he would never backtrack, Hokit removed any doubt about where he stands.
The question now is where everyone else stands.
