*Jimmy Kimmel will remain on ABC longer than originally planned, securing a one-year extension that locks him into hosting “Jimmy Kimmel Live” through May 2027. The agreement extends his tenure beyond his previous end date of May 2026, Entertainment Weekly reports.
The renewal follows a tumultuous period for the late-night show. ABC temporarily removed “Jimmy Kimmel Live” from its schedule in September after the host’s controversial remarks about the killing of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk ignited widespread debate. He returned to the air less than a week later.
The upheaval stemmed from Kimmel’s September 15 monologue, which triggered concern from the FCC and several affiliates. ABC responded by announcing that the program would be suspended indefinitely. Speaking at a Bloomberg Screentime event on October 8, Kimmel reflected on the controversy, saying, “I didn’t think there was a big problem,” and adding, “I just saw it as distortion on the part of some of the right-wing media networks, and I aimed to correct it.”

The season also featured an escalating feud between the host and President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly used social media to demand Kimmel’s removal. “Why does ABC Fake News keep Jimmy Kimmel, a man with NO TALENT and VERY POOR TELEVISION RATINGS, on the air?” Trump wrote, later adding, “Get the bum off the air!!!”
Kimmel fired back on his show: “I’ve actually lost count of how many times the president has demanded I be pulled off the air,” joking that Trump “flips out and wants me fired” every few weeks.
Kimmel added, “You tried to get me fired in September. It didn’t work!” before offering, “I’ll go when you go.”
His previous deal had been set to conclude in 2026, but his future at ABC is now secured for an additional year.
