*iPhone users frequently complain about poor battery performance, but few realize specific in-app settings are responsible for the drain.
Erik Goins, who founded mobile app development company Flywheel Studio, points out that the problem lies not with the applications themselves but with default configurations buried within them, according to Flywheel’s website.
Many people mistakenly blame platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok for battery issues. These applications include processes designed to stay active even after users close them, though Goins explains the solution requires only minutes to implement.
Goins has pinpointed five critical settings that silently consume iPhone battery power. First, location permissions should be changed from “always” to “while using” in Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services, as the “always” option continuously signals GPS, Wi-Fi, and cell towers even when apps are closed. Second, users should disable “precise location” for applications that only need general area information rather than exact coordinates, since precise location constantly engages the GPS chip.
Third, disabling video auto-play in social media applications prevents background preloading that consumes network data, screen rendering, and processor power. Fourth, checking battery statistics under Settings > Battery reveals which apps consume excessive background power, allowing users to disable unnecessary background refresh for applications like games or photo editors. Fifth, reviewing and removing connected app permissions eliminates constant signal exchanges between linked applications.
“Most people assume their battery problems are due to hardware issues, or simply bad luck with a certain app,” Goins stated. “As someone who builds apps for a living, I can assure you that these background processes are intentional design choices made to keep content fresh and user engagement high. However, these same processes are keeping your phone running overtime. Fortunately, users have more control over this than they think.”
