*Fort Valley State University (FVSU) has halted all activities of its Blue Machine Marching Band following allegations of hazing.
As HBCU Gameday reports, the suspension comes days before the university’s highly anticipated game against Central State University on October 4, a major event drawing alumni and fans to Peach County. Britney Smith, FVSU’s Executive Director of Marketing and Communications, confirmed the move in a statement to WGXA.
“Fort Valley State University has directed the Blue Machine Marching Band to suspend all activity due to allegations of hazing. FVSU takes acts of hazing and allegations of hazing seriously and the matter is being investigated. The safety and well-being of our students and Wildcat community are always our top priority,” Smith wrote.
The university’s Office of Legal and Government Affairs is overseeing the investigation, though no specific details about the allegations have been disclosed. The suspension adds complexity to FVSU’s homecoming preparations, a significant moment for the university recently named the top public Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in Georgia by U.S. News and World Report, per HBCU Gameday.
The absence of the Blue Machine Marching Band, a staple of school spirit, raises questions about how the homecoming atmosphere will be affected.
The Wildcats’ annual rivalry game against Tuskegee University, another highlight of their season, underscores the band’s role in energizing crowds at key events. With thousands expected to attend the homecoming festivities, the university remains focused on student safety while navigating the investigation.
