*Cynthia Erivo has made it clear that no style can replace her iconic bald look. The “Wicked” star recently discussed why she has no intention of growing out her hair.
“This is what I want to look like,” Erivo, 38, told Harper’s Bazaar. “I love a heel, I love a nail, I love a jaw, I love a bald head, I love a good outfit. It is legitimately a way of just expressing parts of myself.”
To maintain her striking look, Erivo follows a detailed moisturizing routine. “Between each shave, maybe like three days, [I’ll use a] hot towel immediately,” she explained to Refinery 29’s Unbothered in February. “Keep the pores open with a little spray, like a tea tree one, to make sure everything is taken care of.” She then finishes with Beyoncé’s Cecred Hair Oil. “It just keeps everything good,” she noted. “Keeps the scalp really moisturized and healthy.”
Erivo told Self in March 2023, “… my beauty doesn’t stem from how I do my hair.” She added, “Being powerful is every day finding what the most authentic version of yourself is that day and sticking with it, not allowing other people’s perception of who you are or what you are sway you. How you feel about yourself — that’s powerful for me.”
Fans can catch Erivo’s return as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda when “Wicked: For Good” premieres in theaters on November 21. Directed by Jon M. Chu, the film features a powerhouse cast including Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard, Ethan Slater as Boq, Marissa Bode as Nessarose, Bowen Yang and Bronwyn James as Glinda’s assistants Pfannee and ShenShen, and Sharon D. Clarke as the voice of Elphaba’s nanny, Dulcibear.
Building on the first film’s $750 million global box office and 10 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, “Wicked: For Good” explores the fractured bond between Elphaba and Glinda as they face the consequences of their choices. Exiled in the Ozian forest, Elphaba, now vilified as the Wicked Witch of the West, fights for the rights of Oz’s silenced Animals while seeking to unmask the Wizard’s true nature. Meanwhile, Glinda, basking in fame as Oz’s symbol of goodness, serves under Madame Morrible in the Emerald City, reassuring citizens of the Wizard’s rule, per the press release.
The official trailer highlights Glinda’s rise to stardom as she prepares for a grand wedding to Prince Fiyero, yet she remains haunted by her estrangement from Elphaba. Her attempt to mediate peace between Elphaba and the Wizard fails, deepening their divide and reshaping the lives of Fiyero, Boq, and Elphaba’s sister, Nessarose, especially as a girl from Kansas arrives, altering Oz’s fate.
“Jon M. Chu is a genius in the way he brings this to a close,” Variety’s senior artisans editor Jazz Tangcay wrote on X. “Elphaba and Glinda’s stories are expanded, and leave you with an emotional gut punch at the end. Cynthia Erivo is magnificent, but get ready for Ariana Grande as she takes this performance to the next level and is a tour de force. And wow, the world building, the costumes, and Alice Brooks’ cinematography deserve your attention. Can not wait to see it again. I sobbed hard. ‘Wicked: For Good’ is sheer musical greatness.”
