*Byron Allen and Ava DuVernay have joined forces to create a feature film exploring Coretta Scott King’s multi-decade campaign to uncover what actually occurred during her husband’s killing.
Titled “King Vs. The United States of America,” the project arrives two decades after the civil rights leader’s widow passed away. DuVernay, who helmed “Selma,” collaborates with Allen Media Group Motion Pictures on a story examining events surrounding Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s fatal shooting at Memphis’s Lorraine Motel.
According to Deadline, the film will investigate how Coretta worked tirelessly to challenge official accounts of the tragedy that unfolded during the late 1960s.
James Earl Ray, a known segregationist, immediately claimed responsibility for the murder and entered a guilty plea. Coretta disputed this convenient explanation and maintained doubts about Ray acting alone.
Decades of research followed, including congressional hearings during the 1970s that revealed extensive federal wrongdoing. J. Edgar Hoover’s FBI had conducted unlawful monitoring, electronic eavesdropping, and psychological torment targeting Dr. King. When a courtroom proceeding concluded in 1999, jurors ruled that multiple “government agencies” participated in a coordinated plot.
After losing her husband, Coretta expanded her advocacy across numerous causes while launching the King Center.
“My passion and dedication to exposing the historic secret trial regarding Dr. King’s assassination is unshakable,” Allen stated.
DuVernay remarked, “I’ve long been fascinated with the life and legacy of the King family and am honored to explore this chapter in their remarkable true story.”
