“When the opportunity came to executive produce something with my brother, we knew we had to make it happen,” the Minnesota Timberwolves guard told GQ. “We wanted it to feel like us. We hit up people we like to listen to, and who got a story to tell. We wanted it to sound real.”
The project spans nine tracks plus three skits showcasing Edwards’ bold personality. “The initial vision was just, we’re going to get a lot of dope artists and bring them together for one project,” bdifferent explained, while highlighting his brother’s appeal: “He got the highest charisma that I’ve seen.”
Collaborators on the project include Quavo, Nardo Wick, Hit-Boy, Pusha T, and Wale on the track “Damage Control,” Big Sean on “Moving Different,” and Key Glock. Wale praised Edwards’ authenticity. “He’s just a straight shooter,” the rapper said.
“He’s unapologetically himself, really, really, really confident, extroverted—he’s a lot of things that a lot of us wanted to be as kids. That supreme confidence in himself is an admirable trait,” Wale added.
“He can really just relate to people. It doesn’t matter where you put him, any corner of the world, he’s going to be able to resonate with people,” bdifferent said of his brother.
There’s a long-running connection between hip-hop and sports, with rappers often showing love for the game and athletes stepping into the recording booth. From stars like Shaquille O’Neal and Damian Lillard trying their hand at rap to artists like Drake and Lil Wayne getting involved with major teams, the crossover between the two worlds has become part of pop culture.
Edwards humorously advised rappers to stay off the court. “A couple say they can [play]. I’ve seen a few of them shoot, so I’ma just say we gon’ keep them on the mic,” he said. “But nah, I respect anybody who loves the game.”
