*The Duchess of Sussex asked Michelle Obama some questions for her guest-edited issue of British Vogue.
As we previously reported, the publication tapped Meghan Markle to be the first person to guest-edit the prestigious September issue. Mad About Meghan reports that the former actress used the opportunity to highlight a group of inspirational women from across a wide range who devote their lives to effecting positive change.
A highlight of the issue is a candid conversation between Meghan and Michelle that took place last December during the London stop of Michelle’s book tour.
Markle said she was left “somewhat speechless” when the questions she sent Obama were returned “as a thoughtful, reflective and beautifully curated narrative – a gentle reminder not of how but of why she has become such a globally respected public figure,” per PEOPLE.

“Being a mother has been a masterclass in letting go,” Obama wrote in response to Meghan’s question about what motherhood has taught her. “Try as we might, there’s only so much we can control. And, boy, have I tried — especially at first. As mothers, we just don’t want anything or anyone to hurt our babies. But life has other plans. Bruised knees, bumpy roads and broken hearts are part of the deal.”
Obama also reflected on what it was like for her and Barack as parent to infants (daughter Sasha and Malia): “When Malia and Sasha were newborns, Barack and I could lose hours just watching them sleep. We loved to listen to the little sounds they’d make — especially the way they cooed when they were deep into dreaming,” she said. “Don’t get me wrong, early parenthood is exhausting. I’m sure you know a thing or two about that these days. But there is something so magical about having a baby in the house. Time expands and contracts; each moment holds its own little eternity.”
She added, “I’m so excited for you and Harry to experience that, Meghan. Savor it all.”
Meghan, who welcomed son Archie Harrison in May, had this to say about her British Vogue guest-edit via Sussex Royal:
“We are excited to announce that within the issue you’ll find: an exclusive interview between The Duchess and former First Lady of the United States Michelle Obama, a candid conversation between The Duke of Sussex and Dr Jane Goodall, inspirational articles written by Brené Brown, Jameela Jamil and many others. Equally, you’ll find grassroots organisations and incredible trailblazers working tirelessly behind the scenes to change the world for the better. For the cover, The Duchess chose a diverse selection of women from all walks of life, each driving impact and raising the bar for equality, kindness, justice and open mindedness.
“Guest Editing the September issue of British Vogue has been rewarding, educational and inspiring. To deep dive into this process, working quietly behind the scenes for so many months, I am happy to now be able to share what we have created. A huge thanks to all of the friends who supported me in this endeavour, lending their time and energy to help within these pages and on the cover. Thank you for saying “Yes!” – and to Edward, thank you for this wonderful opportunity.” – The Duchess of Sussex.’
