*Kid Cudi recently shared how his battle with heavy marijuana use shaped his life and career.
The 41-year-old rapper told PEOPLE he was smoking “15 blunts a day” before entering rehab in November to address his addiction. “I just was in this place where I was abusing it,” he admitted. “It truly ruled my life.”
After quitting marijuana for two months, Cudi redefined his relationship with the substance. “And now I just get after it at night or on the weekends when I have the free time and I’m just relaxing, but I’m not smoking nowhere near as much weed as I was smoking before,” he explained.
The hip-hop star noted that a single joint now lasts him all day, a stark contrast to his past habits. “I’m just more interested in being sober a lot more and being more present,” Cudi added.
This shift has noticeably impacted his acting, particularly in a recent film role where he performed sober. “Because in this movie, I cried a handful of times and it was easy to get there because I was sober,” he said, contrasting past roles where he was “blitzed out of my mind.”

Cudi, known for roles in “How to Make It in America” and “Don’t Look Up,” believes sobriety allows him to connect more deeply with his emotions on set. His journey is detailed in his new memoir, “Cudi: The Memoir,” a New York Times Best Seller released alongside his 11th album, “Free.”
The book reflects on his rise to fame, struggles with addiction, and growth as a father and husband.
“I hope it gives [fans] some hope that you do come out on the other side and into the light and God puts us through things because he wants to teach us something,” he said of the memoir’s message.
“Cudi: The Memoir” is available through Simon & Schuster.
