*In Apple Original Films’ “Echo Valley,” premiering globally on Apple TV+ on Friday, June 13, Oscar winner Julianne Moore and multi-Emmy nominee Sydney Sweeney deliver a tour-de-force performance as a mother and daughter caught in a harrowing tale of love, sacrifice, and survival.
Directed by BAFTA-winning filmmaker Michael Pearce and written by Emmy-nominated writer Brad Ingelsby, the thriller follows Kate (Moore), a mother grappling with grief and a strained relationship with her troubled daughter Claire (Sweeney), whose sudden, blood-soaked arrival at Kate’s doorstep unravels a shocking truth. As the stakes escalate, the film explores how far a mother will go to protect her child.
Moore, known for her transformative roles across genres, told us she was captivated by Kate’s complex emotional arc. “I was drawn to the writing, actually, the specificity of the language that Brad used, and the fact that she was coming from this challenging place, this place where she was almost inert because of her grief and the burden of taking care of this farm and the difficulty she’s having with her daughter,” Moore said.
She found Kate’s journey particularly compelling because of its unpredictability. “When you first see her, you perceive her as someone who’s not going to triumph, who’s not going to be able to be even active. So when there are all these surprising twists in the film, it took my breath away. I just loved it. I thought it’s a lot like how we don’t actually know people. We might think we know them, we might think we understand what they’re capable of, but we don’t always.”
For Sweeney, embodying the chaotic and haunted Claire required a deep dive into her character’s psyche.
“I create character books for my characters, and it’s like an interactive journal, diary, timeline of their entire life from the day they’re born to the first page of the script,” Sweeney explained. “I kind of build out her memories and her relationships and her world.”
To further ground Claire’s struggles with addiction, Sweeney turned to real-life stories, including a “YouTube series of this guy who interviews a lot of homeless people in Skid Row that struggle with addiction,” she continued.
“I watch these videos over and over again and would study their different mannerisms and listen to their life. I would take different pieces of them and incorporate into Claire.”
The heart of “Echo Valley” lies in the volatile yet deeply loving relationship between Kate and Claire, a dynamic Moore and Sweeney crafted with ease and authenticity.
“It was very easy,” Moore said of working with Sweeney. “Sydney’s just a great actor and a wonderful partner. I think we were both very invested and have some knowledge of mother-daughter relationships and know how much they can hold the weight of what they bear, how meaningful they are, and how volatile they can be.”

Moore added, “I think we felt safe with each other and safe to explore that. It was fun. It’s fun when there’s a tremendous amount of feeling in a character to get to express it, even though there is some negativity, but there’s a lot of love. I think we were able to easily build it together.”
With a stellar cast including Domhnall Gleeson, Fiona Shaw, Edmund Donovan, Albert Jones, and Kyle MacLachlan, “Echo Valley” promises to be a gripping exploration of family ties tested by unimaginable circumstances.
