*Cam Newton recently discussed the challenges of adjusting to life after football and raising eight kids on the latest episode of “Special Forces.”
Newton, who played his final season with the Carolina Panthers in 2021, admitted it’s been tough not feeling like a “Superman” to his children, especially since he’s no longer earning as much money.
Newton has four children with ex-girlfriend Kia Proctor—and also helps raise Proctor’s older daughter, Shakira. He has two kids with photographer LaReina Shaw, including their son Caesar, and helps raise her older son, Jaden. In March 2024, Newton and his girlfriend, Jasmin Brown, welcomed their first child, a daughter, whose name they have yet to reveal.
“I’m going into a different phase of my life that’s going to require a different form of myself,” Newton said on the show, PEOPLE reports.
“Being in the NFL, everyone knows there’s a large sum of money that comes to you in a short span of time and being away from the game for three years, those checks don’t came in the same. Like I got eight kids,” the former NFL quarterback continued.
“It hurts me knowing that I can’t provide like I once did. It hurts thinking that I’m Superman, but in reality, I’m just a man,” he added.
“There’s a famous quote that says in order to get something that you’ve never had, you go to do something that you’ve never done. At 35, I can literally say, ‘Okay now I’m getting prepared for this next chapter of my life.'”
Despite this financial setback, Newton previously shared that he hopes to have more children with multiple women but wants to avoid marriage.
“A lot of people see my situation and think that I’m not ‘high-functioning’…I’m not married…I have beautiful children…my desire to get married is lower than my fear of divorce,” he explained in a 2024 interview with celebrity psychologist Dr. Cheyenne Bryant, The Jasmine Brand reported.
“A daddy isn’t defined as the man who makes the child (not in all instances), but rather a man who extends his hands and time to help with the child’s raising and his heart to love the child through anything!!” Newton captioned a series of family photos in an Instagram post for Father’s Day in 2020. “Blood doesn’t always make you Daddy. Being a dad comes from the heart,” he added.
“Special Forces” airs on FOX Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET.
