Shoppers often find it inconvenient to wait for staff to unlock these items, especially in understaffed stores. While retailers secure certain products to reduce theft, this practice can lead to lost sales due to customer impatience.
According to a recent Bloomberg report, Walmart is considering letting shoppers unlock secured items themselves with their cell phones digitally.
Bloomberg writes, “Walmart is currently testing this out at hundreds of its stores, and it has discussed possibly expanding the technology to allow Walmart+ members to have a mobile key to access locked-up products.”
“If you walk into pharmacies in cities today, it’s a pretty tough experience with how much is locked behind cabinets, where you have to press a button to get somebody to come out and open the cabinets for you and a lot of shoplifting going on in the stores,” said Amazon CEO Andy Jassy.
The move from Walmart comes after the company announced it was launching 30-minute prescription delivery.
We reported earlier via CNN, Walmart’s pitch to customers is simple – fill your prescription, plus get some groceries delivered to your door, all in one order. Prescription delivery was the number one most-requested service by its customers, the company said in a press release.
“If you’re sick, we can deliver the necessary medicine along with everything else you need to feel better,” said Tom Ward, executive vice president and chief eCommerce officer of Walmart U.S. in a statement.
The service, which is already live in six states and is slated to reach 49 states by 2025, will be available to over 86% of American households, according to Walmart. The company has nearly 4,600 pharmacy locations across the United States.
