*The untimely death of 19-year-old Gursimran Kaur, a Walmart employee found in a walk-in oven at the store in Halifax, Nova Scotia (Canada), has sent shockwaves through the community and raised urgent discussions about workplace safety.
Kaur was discovered by her mother, who also worked at the same location, after a frantic search lasting over an hour. Their close-knit family, originally from India, is now faced with unimaginable grief and financial challenges as they navigate this tragic situation.
Kaur’s death occurred on the night of October 19, when her mother began worrying after she hadn’t seen her daughter for an extended period, NBC News reports.
The Maritime Sikh Society has organized a fundraiser to support the family, revealing the shocking circumstances of Kaur’s death. The inquiry conducted by the Halifax Regional Police has yet to confirm the cause and manner of death, and an investigation is ongoing.

Authorities were called to the Walmart situated at 6990 Mumford Rd. at approximately 9:30 p.m., where responders found Kaur’s body in the bakery department’s large walk-in oven. The heartbreak was compounded by the harrowing realization that Kaur’s mother was the one who opened the oven, contributing to the tragedy’s nightmarish scenario.
As the community rallies around Kaur’s family, the Maritime Sikh Society has successfully raised approximately $120,000 (Canadian dollars) on GoFundMe—well exceeding the original goal of $50,000—dedicated to assisting the grieving family during this trying time. With her father and brother still in India, efforts are underway to bring them to Canada to provide them with familial support.
In response to the incident, Walmart has temporarily closed the bakery. It is cooperating with an investigation led by the Nova Scotia Department of Labour, Skills and Immigration, which issued a stop-work order for the bakery department and related equipment.
“We are heartbroken and our deepest thoughts are with our associate and their family,” a Walmart spokesperson said in a statement. “Our focus remains on taking care of our associates and making sure they have the support they need.”
The tragic circumstances surrounding Gursimran Kaur’s death have caught the attention of the public, shining a light on the necessary conversations about safety standards in workplaces, especially in environments such as food service. The community’s strong response further underscores the value of communal support in times of grief and loss, as residents of Halifax come together to honor Gursimran’s memory and assist her family through their darkest days.
