*Super Bowl champion Terrell Davis revealed that United Airlines sent him a letter placing him on a “no-fly list,” after he was handcuffed and removed from a plane earlier this month.
In a post on Instagram on Tuesday, July 30, Davis said the letter added “insult to injury” for a situation for which United has since apologized, NBC News reports.
Davis shared the letter and criticized United over the racially motivated incident. On Instagram, he wrote, “Adding insult to injury, @united not only had me removed from their flight in handcuffs, but placed me on their No Fly List after it was determined I did nothing wrong and was released,” he said.
“While my family and I continue to have difficult conversations with our children, I will continue to fight for what is right for all passengers of @united,” the Hall of Fame running back and former Denver Broncos star added.
United responded, clarifying that the letter was automatically generated and promptly rescinded.
“Mr. Davis received this letter the day after the incident,” United said in a statement. “It was generated due to the report of the flight attendant — who is no longer employed by United. The day after the letter was sent, we discussed with Mr. Davis’ team that it had been rescinded. We have apologized to Mr. Davis for his experience and continue to review our handling of incidents like this to protect our highest priority — the safety of our customers and crew.”
As we reported earlier this month, in an Instagram post, Davis explained that he was traveling from Denver to John Wayne Airport in Orange County, California, with his wife and three children when the FBI was called on him over an incident involving a flight attendant. According to Davis, when his son asked for a cup of ice during beverage service, the flight attendant didn’t respond. Davis said he “calmly reached behind me and lightly tapped his arm.” The attendant shouted, “Don’t hit me,” and left the beverage cart to “hurriedly approach the front of the plane,” the two-time Super Bowl champion wrote.
“I was confused, as were passengers in front of me who witnessed the exchange,” Davis added.
Upon landing, the pilot requested that all passengers remain seated. Six FBI and law enforcement agents then boarded the plane and handcuffed Davis.
“I was then removed from the flight while being recorded by multiple passengers as I was paraded off of the plane in handcuffs by the officers,” Davis shared on IG. “I was − and remain − humiliated, embarrassed, powerless and angry.”
He was questioned by authorities who determined that “this flight attendant was inaccurate in his accusations and the agents profusely apologized even offering to support me and my family in any way possible,” Davis added.
He told NBC News that race played a role in the incident.
“I believe if I were not a Black man, I wouldn’t have been in handcuffs until they found out exactly what happened,” Davis said.
In a statement, United Airlines said, “This is clearly not the kind of travel experience we strive to provide, and we have reached out to Mr. Davis’s team to apologize.”
