*The Thanksgiving box office saw its best performance in 12 years, led by Disney’s animated sequel “Moana 2,” which opened with $221 million over five days in the U.S. and Canada. This contributed to a total five-day domestic box office of $420 million.
“With a 5-day domestic debut of $221M, Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Moana 2” is shattering numerous box office records including the biggest 5-day opening of all time, the biggest Thanksgiving debut, and Thanksgiving weekend (3-day and 5-day), the biggest Thanksgiving day, and the biggest Black Friday ever,” the news release states. “The film, which reunites Moana (voice of Auli‘i Cravalho) and Maui (voice of Dwayne Johnson) three years later for an expansive new voyage, opened in most markets around the world with $165M internationally, bringing its global cume to date to $386M, the second biggest global debut of 2024.”
“‘Moana 2’ has far surpassed our high expectations this weekend and is a testament to the phenomenon that ‘Moana’ has become,” said Disney Entertainment Co-Chairman Alan Bergman. “We’re fortunate to have an incredibly talented and hard-working creative team at Disney Animation who brought this new adventure to life, alongside our wonderful stars Auli’i and Dwayne and great new music. This is a moment to celebrate, and we’re thankful to all the moviegoers and fans who’ve helped make this a record-breaking debut.”
The weekend also featured strong showings from “Wicked” and “Gladiator 2.”
“Wicked” has earned $359 million globally, and “Gladiator 2” has reached $320 million worldwide. Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Jon M. Chu and based on Gregory Maguire’s bestselling novel, “Wicked” is the first chapter of a two-part immersive experience, with “Wicked: Part Two” set for a theatrical release on November 26, 2025.
Meanwhile, we reported earlier that the UK’s British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) issued a trigger warning for “Wicked,” drawing widespread criticism for highlighting discrimination against people with green skin.
The BBFC is responsible for classifying cinema films, videos, and DVDs. For “Wicked,” the regulators wrote: “A green-skinned woman is mocked, bullied and humiliated because of her skin color. A disabled woman in a wheelchair is treated in a condescending manner by able-bodied people. Talking animals are persecuted in a fantastical society.” ”
TMZ writes: “As you can imagine … people online ain’t happy about this — with many using the hashtag “GoWokeGoBroke” — and railing against the analysis for warning people about discrimination against a skin color that doesn’t exist and talking animals.”
TV host Piers Morgan hit up his Instagram to ask the “woke brigade” to “f*** off with this nonsense.”
“Green skinned people under attack? You cannot make it up. It is evident that the authors of this silly classification are living on planet Bonkers,” sociology professor Frank Furedi said.
