*The fringe woke leftists in the UK have issued a trigger warning for “Wicked,” drawing widespread criticism for highlighting discrimination against individuals with green skin.
The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) is responsible for classifying cinema films, videos, and DVDs. For “Wicked,” the regulators wrote: “A green-skinned woman is mocked, bullied and humiliated because of her skin color. A disabled woman in a wheelchair is treated in a condescending manner by able-bodied people. Talking animals are persecuted in a fantastical society.” ”
TMZ writes: “As you can imagine … people online ain’t happy about this — with many using the hashtag “GoWokeGoBroke” — and railing against the analysis for warning people about discrimination against a skin color that doesn’t exist and talking animals.”
Even Piers Morgan hit up his Instagram to ask the “woke brigade” to “f*** off with this nonsense.”
Per the Daily Beast, writer Simon Evans mocked the BBFC’s warning in an interview with The Daily Mail, calling it “ridiculous and counter-productive at the best of times, dampening excitement, destroying creative, dramatic tension and creating a muffled atmosphere appropriate to an HR seminar than a movie.”
Sociology professor Frank Furedi agreed with Evans’ remarks, stating: “Green skinned people under attack? You cannot make it up. It is evident that the authors of this silly classification are living on planet Bonkers,” he said.
Speaking to The Guardian, columnist Stuart Heritage defended the regulators.
“Some people might even argue that Elphaba’s skin color is an allegory for any form of racism—in fact an allegory that if anything is a little too heavy-handed,” he wrote. “And that the organization had a moral duty to explain that these depictions of racist abuse are what landed Wicked with a PG certificate rather than a U.”
