*JAY-Z’s Team ROC is launching “Corruption Uncovered,” a true crime podcast investigating misconduct and systemic issues within Kansas City’s criminal justice system, including allegations of police corruption.
We reported earlier that Team Roc, alongside the Midwest Innocence Project, recently filed a lawsuit against Kansas City, Kansas, for allegedly violating public records laws. The suit claims the city failed to promptly provide law enforcement records related to decades of police abuse and misconduct, NBC News reports. It specifically addresses the Kansas City Police Department’s failure to release important documents about complaints involving current and former officers, following a records request made by Roc Nation in November 2023.
Hosted by journalist Josie Duffy Rice, “Corruption Uncovered” will unpack the allegations of corruption within the department. The series will also explore the case of ex-detective Roger Golubski, who was facing federal charges for allegedly extorting and sexually assaulting Black women and teens. On Dec. 2, the disgraced cop was found dead at his home in Edwardsville, KS., of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He reportedly took his life the morning he was scheduled to testify in his trial. The U.S. Attorney announced they were moving to dismiss the case due to his death, KMBC reports.
In 2022, Team Roc helped initiate an investigation into Golubski, leading to charges against him for federal civil rights violations, including sex crimes and wrongfully convicting innocent individuals.
“There is a need for powerful and comprehensive storytelling in the criminal justice sector so that the voices of those who have been silenced are heard,” Team ROC Managing Director Dania Diaz said in a statement.
“Our hope is for Corruption Uncovered to not only achieve that purpose but also to serve as an investigative platform that will expose misconduct, demand accountability, and drive change from the people and systems that are duty-bound to protect its citizens and community.”
“Corruption Uncovered” will debut on Dec. 6 on DSPs.
