*Anderson .Paak and his son Soul Rasheed star together in the singer’s upcoming directorial debut, “K-Pops!”
We reported earlier that .Paak said the feature was inspired by the “funnier aspects of the experience” of growing up biracial, according to Daily Mail.
‘I wanted to write a movie that would explore that dynamic and those familial relationships. And also, I get to sneak in quality time with my son while shooting,” said .Paak, who is of Black and Korean heritage.
“My mom is half-black and half-Korean, so I’m a quarter Korean, but I never knew much about my Korean culture until when I was married to my wife, who is fully Korean,” he said in a 2023 interview with Hypebeast, noting that his two sons “pretty much see themselves as Korean.”
“Raising [biracial] kids, there’s a dynamic of, ‘Alright, you got this side and you got this side,’ and teaching ‘em about both,” he added.

In the same interview, the musician gushed about doing YouTube skits with his son.
“My son was really into YouTube, so I was like, ‘We should do skits,’ because he’s naturally funny and he dances. I started helping him film skits, and then he would help me edit them,” he said.
“It made me want to make a movie with him,” the superstar added.
As Complex reports, “K-Pops!” recently premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), where Anderson .Paak discussed the film’s origins with Variety, crediting his Silk Sonic bandmate Bruno Mars as a key inspiration..
“I saw how hands-on Bruno [Mars] was with all his visuals, and I was like, ‘Dude, I need to do my own stuff,’” .Paak said.
His DIY approach flourished as his son got into creating content for YouTube.
“I was staying up all late, editing his videos. It just got me wanting to write a script,” .Paak said. “And pretty much that was the genesis of the whole movie. By then I was making more music videos, and I was telling everybody, ‘I want to really dive into this, get better at it.’ He kind of really brought me back to that passion.”
The script for “K-Pops!” was inspired by his family’s love for BTS. The plot centers on a father who enters a K-pop competition in Seoul and unexpectedly reunites with his long-lost son, who is also a music artist.
