*This Christmas, “The Color Purple” will be illuminating the big screen again!
The second film adaptation is based on the stage musical and directed by Blitz Bazawule. The musical drama stars Corey Hawkins (Harpo Johnson), Colman Domingo (Albert “Mister” Johnson), Taraji P. Henson (Shug Avery), Fantasia Barrino (Celie Harris-Johnson), Danielle Brooks (Sofia), and Phylicia Pearl Mpasi (young Celie).
We spoke to the star-studded ensemble about their favorite songs from the film.
Check out what they had to say.
Q: Which musical performance do you catch yourself singing, aside from your own?
CD: That’s easy!
CH: I’m Here!
CD: The whole cast is always singing, I’m Here. We joke in front of Fantasia because we try to sound just like her…it’s such a beautiful song, everybody wants to sing it. It’s going to become everyone’s anthem.
DB: I’ve Been Working!
TPH: It depends on my mood…
FB: Hell No. Shug Avery’s Coming To Town.
TPH: Everybody’s trying to sing I’m Here!
FB: ..I think Coleman’s got it down!…That means the soundtrack is going to be really good!
PPM: Hell No! It is my favorite! Danielle……. is amazing! It’s my favorite because I got to see her do it on Broadway. I remember thinking like, ‘man, she is so good!’ She’s so good I thought she had been in this industry for…Find out we’re almost the same age. I’m in a phase of my life where I’m starting to say, ‘hell no’ a bit more. I’m learning what I deserve and what I’m worth. I’m willing to walk away from things that aren’t serving me.
“The Color Purple” also stars H.E.R. (Squeak/Mary Agnes), Ciara (Nettie Harris), Halle Bailey (young Nettie), and Aunjanue Ellis and will only be in theaters December 25.
