*Mars, the manufacturer of M&M’s, caused outrage last year with its “Spokescandies,” which included making over the Green M&M and introducing its new Purple character.

Now the brand is taking a step back from its “WOKE” candy campaign after public backlash over the changes to the red, green, brown, orange, blue and yellow M&M

“In the last year, we’ve made some changes to our beloved spokescandies. We weren’t sure if anyone would notice. And we definitely didn’t think it would break the internet. But now we get it — even a candy’s shoes can be polarizing. Which was the last thing M&M’S wanted since we’re all about bringing people together,” the chocolate candy brand said in a statement Monday.

The brand noted that its “spokescandies” were so polarizing that “we have decided to take an indefinite pause” from promoting them. Mars has turned to Maya Rudolph to represent the product instead.

Rudolph will appear in the candy’s Super Bowl ad which will run on Sunday, Feb. 12.

“I’m thrilled to be working with M&M’s,” Rudolph tells TODAY.com. “I am a lifelong lover of the candy and I feel like it’s such an honor to be asked to be part of such a legendary brand’s campaign.”

The actress and comedian said there will be “lots of fun” moments in the upcoming ad.

“It’s a very fun pairing, if I do say so myself,” she says of her partnership with M&M’s. “I think little Maya would be thrilled to get to work with M&M’s.”

In a press release, M&M’s addressed the outrage that their “spokescandies” caused and said Maya is a “spokesperson America can agree on”.

The Rudolph and Mars partnership aims to “create a world where everyone feels they belong,” an M&M’s spokesperson tells TODAY.com.

“Mars has delivered some of the most buzz-worthy Super Bowl moments over the years, and we’re inspired by the M&M’S brand being back in the mix in a new way for 2023,” said Gabrielle Wesley, Chief Marketing Officer, Mars Wrigley North America, in a statement.
