*Tanesha Walker, a Floridian grandmother, lost her life in the hands of a careless surgeon nearly a year ago, thanks to a botched Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) surgery procedure.

But perhaps more startling is the fact that the surgeon, even after it was proved he cost his patient her life, only received a light punishment. He received a $10,000 fine and costs for the investigation, plus a mandated one-hour lecture. That is nothing compared to what he did.

Dr. Oliver Simmons, a Miami plastic surgeon who is employed by New Life Plastic Surgery, knowingly and illegally injected fat into Walker’s gluteal muscles during the BBL operation, leading to her death on April 20, 2022. He obviously knew this to be wrong. But the members of the Florida Board of Medicine still settled with him. Dr. Oliver Simmons received a letter of reprimand against his license and a $10,000 fine from the Florida Department of Health.

Moreover, he was to pay back the department’s investigation and prosecution costs of $9,588.67, plus a one-hour lecture or seminar on the safety and possible complications of BBL surgeries at a medical facility.

In his testimony to the Department of Health, Dr. Paul Goldberg explained that Walker “was not a candidate for office surgery, but maybe she would be a candidate for surgery in a hospital.”

The decision was made after she went to the facility on April 18, 2022, for an evaluation for breast reduction surgery. Tanesha Walker is said to have had a history of high blood pressure. She was also labeled pre-diabetic, and her body mass was measured at an index of 38.1.

But Dr. Oliver Simmons, knowing all these, still approved her for the surgery the day after the examination. He “injected fat into the gluteal muscle, which caused the fatal pulmonary embolism,” according to authorities.

Kenneth Hutchins, a Miami-Dade Chief Medical Examiner who performed the autopsy, reported that he found “many vessels filled with fat emboli” in her lungs, plus “there is vegetable matter in the small airways.”

The autopsy determined that Dr. Simmons violated Florida law by injecting fat into Walker’s gluteal muscles during the surgery.
