*As the highly anticipated fourth installment of the iconic “Expendables” action franchise, “Expend4bles” prepares to make its debut in theaters on September 22, fans of high-octane action mixed with a star-studded cast are gearing up for another cinematic experience.
“Expend4bles” Stars Jason Statham, Sylvester Stallone, Megan Fox, 50 Cent and more. This film promises to deliver the R-rated explosive action and camaraderie that fans have come to love over the years. But behind the scenes, two producers have played a pivotal role in bringing this franchise to life – Les Weldon and Kevin King Templeton.
With a long list of successful films under their belts, including “London Has Fallen,” “Rambo,” “Rocky,” and “Creed,” Weldon and Templeton are no strangers to the world of action-packed entertainment. In an interview with EUR, the duo shared their insights into producing and their approach to keeping the franchise fresh.
When asked about their approach to producing each installment of “Expendables,” Weldon explained, “I guess for us, you just got to try and make each one fresh, you got to make it different enough where it’s fresh, but not too far away, where it loses its core audience. You know, all these, I try and make it pleasant. I try to make these movies fun. The action-adventure escapism movies are somewhat whimsical. They’re not “Saving Private Ryan,” you’re supposed to have fun.”
Templeton added, “We do learn from movie to movie. We learned from the third movie to this movie that we need to really listen to the fans… go back to your roots because that’s what the audience wants.”
The franchise returns to the “R” rating that the first two in the series began with.
Their ability to adapt and respond to audience feedback has been a key factor in the franchise’s success, ensuring that each installment retains the essence that fans love.
When asked about their working relationship, Weldon humorously said, “I’m the idiot; he’s the smart one.” However, their partnership is far from one-sided. Templeton explained, “we complement each other…we stay united in what we’re trying to do, it’s really two minds are better most of the time than just one.”
Their collaboration extends beyond the production office, with the two producers sharing the same workspace, the same car rides, and even late-night text messages to ensure every detail is attended to. Their partnership provides a united front that is essential when dealing with the complexities of a massive production like “Expendables.”
Weldon shared their secret sauce for success, “you have to know how you’re going to work with your partner on the film, have a sense of the story and what you want to accomplish, and have a sense of the audience… communicate that with each other and communicate that with the director and the actors.”
The film hits theatres on September 22.
